Law Practice Tip #286

September 17, 2012

Use color to help you organize

Use different colored folders, paper, and sticky notes to help you identity matters in your office at a glance. Do this by assigning specific colors to various matters or actions.

For example:

  • A blue folder on your desk means the contents need to be signed (checks, letters etc.)
  • A green sticky note means this item needs to be filed or scanned and filed.
  • The bright yellow sheet of paper is your running to-do list (so you can find it easily).
  • The green folder is an estate planning matter.
  • The blue folder is a contingency matter.
  • The pink folder is material you want or need to read.
  • The yellow folder contains financial material, such as work-in-progress reports, retainer status, billable hour reports, or expense reports.

Use the same color scheme idea with your email and contact management program.
