Coaching for Lawyers Law Practice Tip

Law Practice Tip #281

Use past invoices to help you estimate time

In order to give your clients a fair estimate of what your services are going to cost you need a reliable system to base your estimate upon.

Use past invoices from similar matters to help create the project or check list for the new project. Even though your time is noted on the invoice, evaluate and estimate the time for each aspect of the current project based on what you know about your client and the other players in the new project.

In addition to the invoice actions, your new project list should include the types and frequency of client meetings and anticipated negotiations for this client matter. Include a time estimate for all documents revisions you expect to make.

Then add all the times together to get your total estimate to complete the project.

What will you do to help you estimate your time?
