Tips for Change

Get Uncomfortable

In order to make the most satisfying changes in your life it takes getting beyond being uncomfortable. That takes courage.

If the thought of doing something is uncomfortable, rather than not doing it consider:

  • identifying with an inspiring role model
  • coming up with a plan with small steps
  • noticing your beliefs underlying your unwillingness
  • focusing and just doing it.
When you take on uncomfortable challenges the satisfaction and reward always more than make up for the uncomfortable-ness you feel.

Books Supporting Change

The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, by Malcolm Gladwell, is a fascinating book that explains why some trends or ideas spread like viruses. One of the appeals of the book is Gladwell's assertion that little changes can have big effects. When certain people (Connectors, Mavens, Salesmen) start spreading new ideas by word of mouth their message can ripple outward until a critical mass or "tipping point" is reached causing significant change or impact.

His tipping point theory is described in interesting case studies that describe how Connectors, Mavens, Salesmen, Stickiness and the Power of Context are all necessary for an idea or product to "tip".

Coaching Success Story

The common theme for a number of my clients this year is that they are creating significantly more time for vacation or time off. For some of them it is with surprising ease.

I too am taking more time off. I am learning to enjoy the down times of my practice without spending time worrying about what I should be doing instead of just enjoying what I am doing.
