Tips for Change

4 Steps to Getting Organized

  • Make a commitment
  • Determine your desired result
  • Come up with a plan
  • Maintain your plan

Questions to Ponder

What do I want to organize?
What can I get rid of?
Will I ever need this?

Organization Plan Components:
  • Start with a small section/area and complete it before starting a new one
  • Work with someone
  • Block out time in your calendar
  • Stop when you say you will stop
  • Reward yourself
  • Be consistent about getting rid of stuff
  • Make it fun or at least compelling
  • Do something daily/weekly.

Books Supporting Change

Let Go of Clutter by Harriet Schechter is a book that may finally help you get rid of the clutter in your office and home. Her book is easy to read and she combines humor with practical ideas. She explains why it is so hard to get rid of stuff.

Schechter makes the distinction between getting organized and letting go of stuff. She says "organizing can actually obstruct the letting go process".

She has suggestions on how to deal with all the magazines you think you want to read, memorabilia and mental clutter.

Personal Coaching Success Story

Two specific events resulted in me finally getting a tidy desk. Yeah!

One - the concept in Schechter's book that once tidy it is important to maintain one's tidiness. For some reason I had not made that connection with respect to my desk.

And two - that I could hire someone to get my desk tidy. Well I did hire someone, but not to tidy my desk, but rather to do other work to free me up so I could get my desk tidy and keep it tidy. It feels wonderful to finally have a neat desk.
