Tips for Change

Warm wishes for a very Happy Thanksgiving

Did you know Thanksgiving:
  • is celebrated in the U.S. to remember the success of the Pilgrim's survival of their first very difficult year (1621) as evidenced by their successful harvest.
  • is celebrated in Canada to give thanks for a successful harvest.
  • is celebrated in the U.S. on the 4th Thursday of November as proclaimed by the President of the U.S. each year.
  • is celebrated in Canada on the 2nd Monday of October - that date was fixed by Canada's Parliament in 1957.
  • was appointed in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln a National Day of Thanksgiving (after being celebrated by numerous states for many years).
  • was declared November 6, 1879 a day of Thanksgiving and a national holiday by Canada's Parliament.
  • is earlier in Canada because Canada experiences a shorter growing season being farther north.

Both Americans and Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving by enjoying:

  • Family gatherings
  • Lots of turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy
  • Pumpkin pie J
