Tips for Change

Defeating Procrastination

What is the real reason behind your procrastination? What stops you?

Consider:

  • You don't know how.
  • You are afraid you will fail.
  • Your standard is too high.
  • You aren't convinced of the benefits.
  • You choose to do other things.

Create More Time

Say "no" to those things that are truly not important so you have time for what is.

Other Thoughts On Procrastination

Consider the following ideas to take action on procrastination items:
  • Delegate the matter to someone else.
  • Break the objective into small steps.
  • Maybe you don't want to do this thing at all. Remove it from your "to do list".
  • Do the hard thing first.
  • Notice the critical self-talk.
  • If one way is not working do something else.
  • Take a deep breath and do it!

Books Supporting Change

Do What You Love, The Money will Follow: Discovering Your Right Livelihood by Marsha Sinetar inspired me to take the career path I am now on. I read the book well over 10 years ago, and the message of her title struck a cord that stayed with me.

Do What You Love is not simply doing what you feel like and expecting that you will make money. Sinetar points out it is finding work one is passionate about that uses one's innate talents and one is determined to succeed. One must also have good judgment and sound decision making abilities in choosing the work for the money to follow.

W. Somerset Maugham: "It's a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it."

Personal Notes

Over three years ago I decided to trust the wisdom of "Do What You Love"! I am glad I did. I have always known I liked connecting with people, which was why I started out 20 years ago practicing law in a small firm - there was lots of direct client contact.

Today I am again connecting with many individual clients in a way I really enjoy. I get immeasurable pleasure and a sense of fulfillment when my coaching conversations lead to a client's profound ah ha! That might mean they are motivated to do something they did not think they could do. - And then they succeed! .
